RPD: Man Suspected In Fatal Stabbing Found Dead From Self Inflicted Wound

There was a killer on the loose, according to Redding Police, but he was found dead early Thursday morning. At 7:40PM Wednesday night, officers were sent to Everest Way in West Redding on reports of a stabbing. They found 67-year-old Robert Whitman suffering from multiple stab wounds, including a very serious wound to his neck. He did not survive his injuries. His wife, 67-year-old Minerva Whitman, had been stabbed in the face. She was treated at Mercy Medical Center and released. Witnesses told investigators that the Whitmans and others had been at the Everest Way home for a dinner gathering. 46-year-old Francis Peter Lane, known as “Frank”, was an acquaintance of the family and had also been invited to dinner. The Whitmans had tried to help Lane in the past but he was dealing with some issues. He arrived at the home, asked for Robert Whitman, and was invited inside. He went to where Whitman was and reportedly began stabbing him immediately. Minerva tried to intervene and was injured. After the attack, Lane fled in his Toyota pickup. Surveillance video from neighboring homes showed lane arrive, go inside, and leave, followed by panicked people spilling out of the house. A manhunt continued until 3 O’clock Thursday morning, when Lane’s pickup was found at the end of Dream Street, a short distance from the crime scene. Lane was inside the truck with what appeared to be multiple self inflicted knife wounds to his arms, and he was dead. A knife believed to be the murder weapon was also found. Police don’t believe anyone else was involved in the crime.
