Name of Man Shot By Police In East Redding Released

The Sheriff’s Office has released the name of a man who was shot dead by police in east Redding early Friday morning. At 2:07am a woman called from a four-plex on Wilson Avenue east of Shasta View to say that her live-in boyfriend, 22-year-old Vernchoy Saechao, had slapped her. RPD officers responded to the scene and arrived to find the victim in the parking lot. She said Saechao had been drinking all night and was inside stabbing the walls of the apartment with a knife. There were other family members there as well, including 3 young children. Two officers went inside and one stayed outside the front door. Saechao left the apartment through a sliding door to an enclosed porch and started running away, while firing multiple rounds from a handgun at the officers behind him. Saechao was hit by return gunfire and, despite lifesaving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers or civilians were hit by any bullets. The investigation is being handled by the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office, which says Saechao was armed with a .40 caliber Glock pistol that had a high capacity 22 round magazine. He had two other 15 round magazines on him as well. Multiple empty shell casings were found on the ground. Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information is urged to contact the Sheriff’s Office at 245-6135
