The Forest Service is monitoring a fire deep in the Marble Mountains Wilderness. The Island Fire was sparked by lightning and was first spotted on Monday June 26th. It’s burning in old growth mixed conifer forest about 14 miles west of Etna in an area with no large recorded fire history, but it’s surrounded on the north, west and south by areas of large fires that burned in recent years. As of Friday morning the Island Fire is about 257 acres, and is expected to grow up to another 200 acres over the weekend. A public meeting is planned for the Fort Jones Community Center at 5:30 Friday afternoon.
