Fires On The Fourth

A couple of fires threatened homes in the west Cottonwood area Tuesday. Cottonwood, Happy Valley and CalFire responded at around 2 o’clock to Pineapple Lane off of Gas Point Road, where several homes were threatened. A vacant mobile home went up quickly and took with it a little more than an acre of brush and dry grasses and damaged several apparently abandoned vehicles. The fire may have been caused by a neighbor using a chain saw. The structure apparently rekindled early Wednesday morning and crews had to return to the scene at around 2:30am.
Another fire broke out off Tuesday evening off of Coyote Lane, which runs off Happy Valley road south of Olinda Road. Forward progress was stopped at about 3 acres a little before 8 o’clock. Redding and Anderson firefighters assisted on both fires.
Redding Fire Chief Gerry Gray says there were a few brush fires caused by Tuesday night’s fireworks show but fire crews were already positioned at key locations to respond quickly. The chief also said an engine crew responded to reports of a person doing a fire dance with flaming whips. That person was told to stay out of the dry grass.
