Several hundred pounds of illegal fireworks won’t be causing any trouble after a man from Wheatland was busted in a sting operation by CalFire on Friday. 22-year-old Jonathan Ponce had apparently been advertising the fireworks for sale online. The ad was answered by CalFire investigators and a transaction was arranged in the Redding area. After the purchase, Ponce was stopped by CHP and CalFire officers and his vehicle was searched. About 300 pounds of fireworks was allegedly found. CalFire says these weren’t the “Safe and Sane” type that is allowed in some California counties, but were the dangerous variety that are only available out of state. All fireworks are illegal to possess in Shasta County. The “Safe and Sane” type that can be purchased legally in Tehama County do not include anything that flies or pops. Ponce was booked into jail.
