Tenant Accused Of Stealing Washer & Dryer To Recoup Security Deposit

An unhappy former tenant stole appliances from a house he had rented and left a gas leak behind, according to Redding Police. Thursday afternoon the landlord of the house on El Portal Drive went by and checked on the place. When he returned at 8:30PM Thursday night the stackable washer/dryer combination in the laundry room was gone. He called Redding Police and when they arrived they immediately smelled natural gas because the gas line to the dryer had been cut by the thief. Redding Fire Department was called and they shut off the gas and ventilated the house with fans. Meanwhile the landlord started checking various internet sites looking for his missing washer and dryer. Sure enough, he found them for sale for $600 on the site “Let Go”. He called and was told to meet at a Placer Street address that happened to be the forwarding address given by the former tenant. Officers headed to that house and saw the former tenant, 29-year-old Donn Allen Malrose, walking down the street. He was ordered to stop but he reportedly ran into a house, and was eventually cornered in a back bedroom and taken into custody. Officers say Malrose admitted to stealing the appliances, saying he had done it to recoup some of his security deposit, which had not been returned to him. The washer and dryer were returned to the landlord and Malrose was booked into jail.
