Municipal Internet Utility, Sobering Center On Council’s Agenda

At Tuesday’s meeting the Redding City Council will hear a proposal by Councilman Adam McElvain to create a super-fast Municipal Internet utility. He says the main west coast fiber artery runs along the railroad tracks so there’s a prime opportunity to build a 5 or 10 Gigabit fiber network. McElvain suggested the plan during his campaign and it was continued from the last meeting. The council will also discuss taking the money from the sale of the old downtown police station building and using it to establish a sobering center. That would divert people who are drunk or on drugs and provide them with referrals for help. It also would free up jail space.
