The Sheriff’s Office has released the name of the man who was shot and killed by Redding Police Wednesday. At 11:45AM officers were called to the White Oak Apartments, a horseshoe-shaped single story complex on Reservoir Lane. 56-year-old Edmund Charles Leighty Sr was armed with a rifle and apparently told the occupants of an apartment that he was not going to go out easy and that there was going to be a shootout in the front yard. When officers arrived Leighty was in front of the apartment holding a semi-automatic 22 caliber rifle with a collapsible stock. After repeatedly ordering Leighty to drop the gun, four officers opened fire. Leighty was declared dead at the scene. The sheriff’s office says he may have been suffering some mental health issues. A man at the scene who said he was an acquaintance of Leighty told us he had been making increasingly paranoid statements recently about people being after him. In recent days he had been visiting the occupants of the apartment after a domestic violence incident made him unwelcome at his home in Palo Cedro, according to the Sheriff’s Office. He had been arrested for the incident on Monday and released from jail the next day. A felony DUI from 1999 made him forbidden from possessing guns. The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave.
