Redding area first responders, joined by dozens of civilians, again lined the roads in salute as a procession escorted the body of Modoc County Deputy Jack Hopkins. Following an autopsy at the Shasta County Coroners Office in South Redding, the body of the fallen deputy was transported Saturday to Yreka, where his family is making final arrangements. Hopkins was raised in the Siskiyou County town of Montague. The 31-year-old deputy was shot last Wednesday while responding to a call for a family disturbance in rural Modoc County about 8 miles south of Alturas. He was alone when he arrived and confronted the suspect, 47-year-old Jack Lee Breiner, who allegedly shot deputy Hopkins and killed him instantly. Breiner drove away but was intercepted by Sheriff Mike Poindexter, who wounded him in a gunfight before his capture. A case has not yet been filed against Breiner, but Modoc County District Attorney Jordan Funk has indicated it will be a capital case and they’ll be seeking the death penalty.
